polyurethane parts

A polyurethane part subjected to tough physical conditions can long outlast a similar part made from metal or plastic. It's a very versatile engineering material designed to provide properties not available in conventional metal, plastic and rubber. Polyurethane is made by combining a prepolymer and a curative, mixed together and poured into a mold where they react rapidly to form a solid elastomeric article. The major benefits of using this material are its performance and cost effectiveness.

It is tough, abrasion resistant, tear resistant and has a high load bearing ability - these are the reasons urethane often out performs other materials under challenging conditions. Extraordinary physical properties allow these components to be used for applications in harsh environments, where components made of another material would be unsatisfactory.

Cost efficiency increases due to strength and durability - you'll have less downtime for the replacement of damaged or worn out pieces. Tooling and equipment costs are also lower because the molds can be made from plastic, metal, fiberglass-reinforced epoxy or urethane itself - almost anything that doesn't hold moisture and can take the modest heat of casting operations.

advantages of urethane parts versus metal, plastic and rubber:

metal:

Lighter weight, better wear, corrosion and abrasion resistance are important advantages over metal.
Reduced "noise pollution" in the workplace is often dramatic because noise is absorbed, not generated.
Longer life, easy and rather inexpensive casting decreases downtime and increases cost efficiciency.

plastic:

Durability allows urethane to withstand impact and shock loading better than plastic.
Elastomeric memory gives the ability to stretch and return to its original dimensions; plastics remain stretched..
High abrasion resistance is also an advantage that plastics simply don't have.

rubber:
High load bearing ability, abrasion/cut/tear and ozone resistance give urethane greater durability.
Grades from clear, opaque white/amber or custom colored are often available.
Pourable, castable - allows cheaper tooling and fabrication of complicated pieces.

polyurethane parts not recommended for:

Certain chemical environments - testing may be necessary.
Heavy service loads at high temperatures, around 220-225 degrees Fahrenheit.
Environments with both moisture and elevated temperatures.
(Although, at low temperatures most urethanes can withstand continual contact with water for years.)
